How Can Twitter Benefit A Trade Publication?

January 24th, 2010

I work for a Chicago-based trade magazine that is aimed at food and beverage retailers. Our company is looking to set up all of its publications with several different social networking sites. One of them is Twitter. While I understand how Twitter works, I have yet to see a good example of a publication that benefits from it. Could someone explain the benefits Twitter would provide to a trade magazine?

Free Or Paid Web Hosting For Your Blog

January 24th, 2010

There are many choices for web hosting companies available and for blogging there are many free choices offered as well. The question that comes to mind to me is Is free webhosting cheap What I mean by that is what it is going to cost me in terms of functionality and accessibility. Let us take a look at some of the comparisons between free web hosting and paid web hosting. Unless you have been living under a rock for the last couple of years then you know that blogging has become a formidable force on the internet and has allowed many people to get an online presence that may otherwise have been unable to do so. Many of these people are making their living by blogging and some like Jason Calcanis have become wealthy from it. Jason built a network of blogs over about eighteen months and sold them to AOL for nearly 30 million That is a pretty good ROI.

Anyway I digress back to our discussion on web hosting. If you have decided that you want to operate a blog your next choice will probably be what blogging platform or software you want to use to accomplish you blogging. Relax it is easy. Most of the blogging software out there today is open source which means it is you guessed it free In this instance free is not a bad thing I use Wordpress almost exclusively it is free and has more options that I care to learn or use. There are other blogging software options available but I wont go into them here because this article is about web hosting. As far as web hosting for your blog you can choose free web hosting or paid so let us take a closer look at our choices. First off you can choose Blogger which is owned by Google.

Blogger is a good program especially for beginning bloggers because it is easy to use it is web based and the price is right. It is free. With that said however if your intention is to blog professionally and possibly run a large number of blogs with automated content then Blogger is not for you. I have seen Google shut down many blogs because they considered them to be spam. If you want control over your own destiny then you want to use paid web hosting and have your blogs on your own server or at least a shared server. Still in the realm of free web hosting you also have a fairly new option from Wordpress who now offers a free web hosting for Wordpress blogs at their site as opposed to the .org site where you get the software and plug ins. The problem is that like Google they are very restrictive with what you can put on your blogs and how you update them. Another big issue with free web hosting is that you will usually have to display advertising of some sort which pays for your web hosting. This is great for the web hosting companies because it gives them tons of virtual real estate out there with their name on it not so great for you. If you are blogging professionally and if you are trying to make money for it then you are blogging professionally you do not want any distractions on your site that leads visitors away from your site unless you are being paid for it like you do when someone clicks on an Adsense ad or affiliate banner. My recommendation is that you pay for your own hosting because it gives you a wealth of choices much more storage space and takes almost all restrictions off of you within reason. There are still some web hosting companies that will not allow you to host gambling or porno blogs but other than that you are pretty open. Paid web hosting is not that expensive. You can get an account that will host as many blogs as most people will want to deal with a few bucks a month. So for the cost of a domain name and your hosting you will probably be around 100 a year. That is a pretty cheap investment for something that enables you to plug into all the ways of earning money on the net.

Best Forex Software – 3 Tips to Find the Best Forex Software

January 24th, 2010

If you want to be a successful currency trader, you need to obtain the best forex trading software tools. When searching for these types of software applications, you need to find products that are easy to use, and allow you to make consistent profits. Here are three tips to help you find the best forex software products:

(1) Products May Not Be All That They Say They Are
Do not rely solely on the opinions of companies. Unfortunately, there are many unscrupulous people out there making outlandish claims that their software will not be able to live up to. When selecting a forex application look for reliable, reputable companies. This should increase the likelihood that what will be purchasing one of the better forex software products available.

(2) Try before you buy
This type of software can be very expensive. You don’t want to spend a lot of money only to find out that the tool didn’t live up to its claims. Before purchasing a forex software package, ask if the company offers a free trial period. Oftentimes, you can get a fully functioning version of the software to try out for a few days.

(3) Blogs and Forums May Help
You may be able to find high quality opinions of forex software products from other users. Search for forex related blogs and forums. Look for reviews of software products that have many comments from different people. If there are only a few comments about the software, these comments may be coming from the creator of the tool. You want to find unbiased opinions. If there are many comments, then the creator’s comments will be diluted amongst the legitimate opinions.

Buying forex software is one of the most important decisions that you will make if you want to be a serious, successful currency trader. If you want to learn more about finding the best forex software…

A Clothes Encounter In The Business World

January 24th, 2010

Do you ever wonder where all the dress rules have gone? Depending on when and where you are on any given business day, the words “distant past” might come to mind. It’s difficult to decide if people don’t know what to wear to work or if they have lost sight of the relevance of appearance to professional success.

The Queen of England is reported to have told Prince Charles, “Dress gives one the outward sign from which people can judge the inward state of mind. One they can see, the other they cannot.” Clearly, she was saying what many people are reluctant to accept; that people judge us by the way we dress. In all situations, business and social, our outward appearance sends a message.

Try going to a busy restaurant at lunchtime. Look around you at what people are wearing and see if you don’t make judgments about who they are, their line of business, their personalities and their competencies. Think about how you feel when you are dressed in your usual business attire as opposed to casual dress. Your choice of business apparel speaks to your professional behavior and credibility. It is important to understand how to dress for business if you wish to promote yourself and your organization in a positive manner,

How you dress depends on four factors: the industry in which you work, the job you have within that industry, the geographic area in which you live; and most importantly, what your client expects to see.

Professional Dress for Men

In men’s clothing, fashion does not change significantly from season to season but business attire is about being professional and not about being fashionable. It’s about presenting yourself in a way that makes your clients feel comfortable and confident with you. Dressing for success is still the rule. The professional businessman should keep in mind these few points when deciding what to wear to work.

Choose a conservative suit in navy, black or gray either pinstripe or solid. The quality of the material speaks as loudly as the color and can make the difference between sleaze and suave.

A solid white or blue dress shirt with long sleeves offers the most polished look. The more pattern and color you add, the more the focus is on your clothing, rather than your professionalism.

Ties should be made of silk or a silk-like fabric. Avoid the cartoon characters and go for simple and subtle if you want to enhance your credibility.

Socks should be calf-length or above. Make sure they match not only what you are wearing, but also each other. A quick glance in good light before heading out the door can save embarrassment later in the day. Check for holes as well if you’ll be going through airport security and removing your shoes.

Shoes should without question be conservative, clean and well polished. Lace-up shoes are the choice over slip-ons or flip flops. Don’t think for a minute that people don’t notice shoes. Many people will look at your feet before your face.

Belts need to match or closely coordinate with your shoes. Once again, quality counts.

Keep jewelry to a minimum. In a time when men sport gold necklaces, bracelets and earrings, the business professional should limit himself to a conservative watch, a wedding band and maybe his college ring.

Personal hygiene is part of the success equation. Freshly scrubbed wins out over heavily fragranced any day of the week. Save the after-shave for after hours, but never the shave itself.

The finishing touch for the business man is his choice of accessories: briefcase, portfolio and pen. When it comes to sealing the deal, a top of the line suit, a silk tie and a good pair of leather shoes can lose their affect when you pull out the ball point pen you picked up in the hotel meeting room the day before.

Professional Dress for Women

When women entered the workplace in the 1970’s and 1980’s in greater numbers than ever before and began to move into positions which had traditionally been held by men, many of them believed that they needed to imitate male business attire. The result was women showing up at the office in skirted suits or coordinated skirts and jackets with tailored blouses finished off with an accessory item that looked very much like a man’s tie. Happily those days are gone. While the business woman may now wear trousers to work, she does it out of a desire to appear professional and at the same time enjoy the flexibility and comfort that pants offer over skirts. Her goal is no longer to mirror her male colleagues.

The same overall rules apply to women’s work attire as apply to men’s. Business clothing is not a reflection of the latest fashion trend. A woman should be noticed for who she is and her professional skills rather than for what she wears. Her business wear should be appropriate for her industry and her position or title within the industry.

Start with a skirted suit or pants suit for the most conservative look. A skirted suit is the most professional. With a few exceptions, dresses do not offer the same credibility unless they are accompanied by matching jackets.

Skirts should be knee-length or slightly above or below. Avoid extremes. A skirt more than two inches above the knee raises eyebrows and questions.

Pants should break at the top of the foot or shoe. While Capri pants and their fashion cousins that come in assorted lengths from mid-calf to ankle are the latest trend, they are out of place in the conservative business environment.

Blouses and sweaters provide color and variety to woman’s clothing, but they should be appealing rather than revealing. Inappropriate necklines and waistlines can give the wrong impression.

Women need to wear hose in the business world. Neutral or flesh-tone stockings are the best choices. Never wear dark hose with light-colored clothing or shoes. Keep an extra pair of stockings in your desk drawer unless the hosiery store is next door or just down the street from the office.

Faces, not feet, should be the focal point in business so chose conservative shoes. A low heel is more professional than flats or high heels. In spite of current fashion and the sandal rage, open-toed or backless shoes are not office attire. Not only are sandals a safety hazard, they suggest a certain official agenda.

When it comes to accessories and jewelry, less is once again more. Keep it simple: one ring per hand, one earring per ear. Accessories should reflect your personality, not diminish your credibility.

Business attire is different from weekend and evening wear. Investing in a good business wardrobe is an investment in your professional future. For those who think it’s not what you wear but who you are that creates success, give that some more thought. Business skills and experience count, but so does personal appearance and that all-important first impression.

How To Blog For An Income ? Understand How You Can Blog To Create Income

January 24th, 2010

Not that long ago there was no such thing as a blog, and now we hear of people making small fortunes from them.  Not surprisingly, many people do not understand how this is possible.  No-one has to pay to read a blog, so how on earth can anyone make money by doing it?  It is actually very simple when you understand the mechanics.  The principles are the same whether in relation to a blog or an information website.  Neither one needs to sell anything to make money.

Any blog or website can feature adverts on its pages and when anyone visiting your site clicks on one of these adverts you get some money.  One of the easiest ways to do this is through Google Adsense, where you simply enter a bit of code onto your page, and Google do the rest.  What happens is that Google automatically assess the content of each page, and serve adverts which are relevant to that topic.  The benefit of this is that because the adverts are directly related to the subject your visitors are interested in, they are more likely to click on an advert.

The number of people who click on adverts will only ever be a small proportion of the total number of visitors.  The rate at which people click on adverts compared to the total number of pages viewed is known as a ‘click through rate’.  This varies a lot, but typically you might expect it to be between one and four percent.  In other words, for every hundred pages looked at by visitors, you might get on average two or three clicks on adverts.

The amount of money you get from each click can vary enormously too, depending on the subject of your site.  The amount you receive depends on how competitive the topic is for advertisers and how profitable that particular market is.  Each click could earn you anything from less than a cent to several dollars.  Usually you are only getting a few cents per click, so you can quickly see that it does not look like an easy way to get rich quickly.  As the number of advert clicks will only ever be a small proportion of your total visitors, you are not going to make any serious money unless you have a serious number of visitors.

There is another part to the financial equation with regard to making money from blogs.  In addition to advertiser income, the other possible source of income is from referrals of products sold on other websites.  The way this works is that you find good products that you believe your visitors will be interested in and recommend them on your website.  If your visitors follow the link from your site to the product site and make a purchase, you receive a commission on that sale.  For this to work properly you need to be referring good quality products that you genuinely believe in, and which your visitors are actually looking for.  If you get this right, and have enough traffic, the commissions can certainly be substantial.

You can now see that there is clearly an income to be made from blogging, but money from adverts and referrals will be tiny unless you have lots of traffic on your blog.  A few individuals do manage to hit luck and get fantastically busy blogs, but realistically, that is not something the vast majority of us can do by design.  If you understand the process, it is relatively easy to create a blog and get a reasonable supply of traffic, but that is never going to earn you a worthwhile income on its own.  The way people manage to make serious money blogging, and this is the really important part of this article, is by creating lots of different blogs.  Even if you only get a few dollars a day from each blog, that becomes a healthy income if you multiply it by a few dozen or more.

That leads onto how you manage to actually generate good quality blogs in the kind of number you need to in order to earn good money.  If that sounds like a lot of work, it is, unless you use blog creation software, which is the only way to manage blogs on that kind of scale.  What a good blog creation tool will do for you is automate as many aspects of the creation and promotion of blogs as possible.  The work is just not physically possible without such a tool.

Take care not to opt for anything which only looks at the physical creation of blogs.  Having a blog is not enough on its own – it has to have traffic.  No blog or website will get traffic unless it is created in the right way and promoted properly for search engine ranking.  Unless your blogs show up in search engine results, they will have no visitors, and therefore no income.

A Fashion Career Fashion Mysteries Explained

January 24th, 2010

Those with a career in fashion are certainly content to ride along with the whims of their contemporaries. But, perhaps in the odd moment in the stock room or pausing over your designing template, you paused to wonder, “Why do we do this this way anyway?” So here we’ll have a round-up of all those fashion quirks that you always wondered about in the course of your fashion career, but never dug deep enough to explain:

Where does the stitching on the back pockets of Levi’s jeans come from?
The stitching originally because Levis featured cotton-lined back pockets, and the stitches were intended to keep the lining from buckling. The color of the thread was also orange, to match the distinctive rivets. The rivets themselves were another innovation – riveted seams were a dramatic advance in work clothes technology that doubled the durability of the product. The lining was dropped soon afterward, but the stitches lived on; they had become such a distinctive part of the Levis look that the company was able to register them as a trademark in 1942.

What is the original purpose of men’s neckties?
The wearing of neck cloths dates back at least to the time of the Roman Empire, when soldiers wore a neck band to catch the sweat or block the cold, depending on the weather of the season. In the seventeenth century, the Croatian regiment of Louis XIV also wore neck cloths, from which we derive our word “cravat”. Cravats, which were cloths wound around the neck and often tied at the ends, gradually evolved into the bow tie, and by the nineteenth century into the modern long tie. As with many fashion accessories, this one lost it’s function in pursuit of style.

Why do we say a “pair of pants” when there’s only one unit?
That’s actually more of a vagary of the English language than any important clothing history. It is true that originally separate articles of clothing for each leg, such as stockings, evolved to mean a pair of any leg-covering item, as in “a pair of hose”. But years later, when the two pieces of hose was joined at the top to make pants, the plural identity stuck. English has a lot of these nouns which were once dual but now singular: eyeglasses, scissors, tweezers, shears, and pliers.

Who invented Velcro?
Most fashion mavens probably wish the answer were “nobody” and then they wouldn’t have to nag people not to wear it. But velcro was invented by one George de Mestral. He got the idea while hunting game birds in the ancient Jura mountains of Switzerland. Doing so, he had to pull sticky cockleburrs clinging to the dog’s coat and his own trousers. He examined the cockleburrs and decided that they’d make good clothing fasteners. The fashion police never forgave him.

Why is a man’s billfold pocket on the left side?
It seems odd given the right-handed dominance that most men’s clothing are designed with. However, the wallet on the left makes perfect sense when you consider that it takes less dexterity to retrieve a wallet than it does to open it and take out bills in the right amount. Try having a right-hander take out their wallet with the right hand, then have them take money out – they’ll shift the wallet to the left hand and open it and take the bills out with their right.

Where did the extra-long pinkie nail com from?
Originally it was an organic means of scooping snuff, cocaine, and other inhalant drugs up to be sniffed. Later it became a symbol of belonging to a counter-culture, currently amongst Goths. Some Goths claim that they use it to hold the sugar when they pour their Absinthe. OK, whatever. Independent of this development is the custom in various parts of the word for keeping one long and sharpened nail to open envelopes.

Where did cotton T-shirts come from?
Originally these started out as underwear carried home from France by World War one “doughboys”, becoming a statement of youthful rebellion after James Dean wore one in “Rebel Without a Cause”. Next T-shirts were then adopted as outerwear that doubled as personal billboards in the 1960s. Today T-shirts as outerwear all by themselves are a sign that the wearer has absolutely no interest in talking to anybody in the fashion industry. And it works like a charm.

Where does “throwing your hat in the ring” come from?
Once upon a time in eighteenth century England, men’s hats were each uniquely made by hatters, who took great care to customize each piece to it’s owner. Thus a hat was as good as your calling card. Next in early nineteenth century America, when public boxing contests were a popular participatory sport (as opposed to the spectator sport of today), you signified that you were joining the contest by throwing your hat into the boxing ring. You’d then have to fight the champ to get it back or presumably go home bare-headed.

Where did the trenchcoat come from?
The trenches of World War one! The trenchcoat was originally combat wear, meant to be a water-proof and warm covering for a shivering night in the trenches. Later use brought it alongside the raincoat in utility. Raincoats are not a fashion item; trenchcoats are. And these days a trenchcoat isn’t even always water-proof.

Where does the concept of having a “bad hair day” come from?
We’re all familiar with the experience of waking up with hair that just doesn’t behave right for no fathomable reason. Actually, it is caused by tossing and turning in your sleep the night before, twisting and flattening the hair into shapes so that it’s still kinked in the morning. Thus a “bad hair day” became synonymous with being in a bad mood, since the afflicted obviously hadn’t slept well the night before and was grumpy. The exact phrase “bad hair day” can be traced the phrase to the “Gary Shandling Show” of 1991, when the comedian would ask his audience “Is my hair alright? How’s my hair?”. This became one of his taglines, and later the response “bad hair day!” entered the culture.
